Academic Life

Newman undergraduate students study mainly at the University of Melbourne in the Faculties of Medicine, Architecture, Law, Commerce, Engineering, Agricultural Science, Creative Arts, Arts, Science, Veterinary Science, Social Work, and Physiotherapy. In 2009 there are 233 Newman College students studying at the University of Melbourne. An additional 4 students are studying Pharmacy at Monash University and 12 students undertaking courses at RMIT University.

Those invited to join the Senior Common Room are usually engaged in post-graduate work. Most recently they were researching in the fields of Medicine, Economics, Social Anthropology, Intellectual Property Law, History and Conducting. Over the course of a year, the Senior Common Room welcomes a number of scholars from abroad.

Excellent study facilities and IT facilities are available in the Academic Centre. On three evenings a week, tutorials take place in the rooms designed for the purpose in this Centre. Whilst many of the Senior Common Room members are academic tutors, the larger proportion of academic tutors is drawn from the University and a wider professional community. The academic programme works to clarify and extend students' understanding of their University courses. Tutors stand, also, as academic role models for their students.
